Another Classic form Nagesh Kuknoor (remember Iqbal?) with a fresh theme, fresh cast and fresh piece of acting from each of the leads. This movie brings Kuknoor in the category of classic kings of Indian Cinema like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gurudutt, Sai Paranjape etc. It is the capability of Kuknoor to present the theme in such a way that the main emphasis floats throughout on a purpose rather than the performers. The movie talks about character and susbstance in a person. It is quite simply woven story revolving around three main characters and keeps on reading their mind changing under circumstances. It is a story of two ladies who never know each other but have to meet for a reason, become friends, then when one girl comes to know that the other girl’s husband is killer of her husband, they become enemies, but again become friends after the final turn in the story.
The Story: Story revolves around three main characters of the movie who are the main architects of the concept of the story. Zeenat – played by Gul Panag is excellent and best of all in performance. She is a girl who is married to Ameer in Himachal Pradesh. Ameer joins a company in Saudi just after his marriage and leaves Zeenat with his parents. Meera – played by Ayesha Takia is a girl recently married to Shankar in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Shnakar’s father is played by Kulbhushan Kharbanda who owns a big Haveli but living in misery. Shankar also joins a company in Saudi and leaves Meera with his parents in Udaipur. Coincidently Shankar and Ameer join the same company in Saudi Arab. Turn 1 – Story takes a twist here when Shankar falls down from umpteenth floor of a building and Saudi Police catches Ameer for murdering him. Although it is not proven that Ameer had some intentions or it happened by chance but Ameer is surely going to be awarded a severe punishment for this incident. Only option is if the wife of the person who is killed gives in writing to Saudi Government to pardon the killer, the Saudi Police will release the killer without any punishment. Zeenat decided to go alone to Rajasthan from Himachal to meet Meera and convince/request her to give in writing that Ameer be pardoned. A long journey by a lone lady starts from here. On her way she meets a guy “Behrupia” who is a bad man with a ‘good heart’. This guy finds out the Meera’s whereabouts after knowing her purpose and accompanies Zeenat to her destination (Meera’s House). Shreyas although had a small role but he impressed fully with his performance. Zeenat meets Meera and does not tell her the real purpose. They both become good friends. Behrupia tells Zeenat that she is left with only one day to get the papers signed by Meera. Turn 2: Meera’s father-in-law sells Meera for 5 Lacs to a rich man who will enjoy her for few days and in return will pay back the Loan of 3 Lacs for Haveli and 2 Lacs for renovation of Haveli. Turn 3 and Climax: Meera runs away from her house after understanding her father-in-law’s intentions. She understands that Zeenat is a simple Lady and whatever happened to Shankar was only coincidental and not intentional. She also understands that she has lost her Husband but even if Zeenat’s husband gets the punishment, she will not be getting her husband back but another lady will loose her husband. She runs and meets Zeenat at Railway Station where she signs the papers that will help Zeenat to get her husband back. Zeenat offer Meera to go along with her to her place and since Meera had nobody now, she decides to go along with Zeenat. Finally the two ladies become good friends again.
Performance Index: Gul Panag – 10/10, Ayesha Takia – 9/10 and Shreyas Talpade – 10/10, that means the overall performance is excellent from all the three lead characters. Only a director like Kuknoor could afford to take not-so-famous cast and newcomers to get the best out of them and presents a strong theme.
Did I mention somewhere that all the 8 songs are superbly sung.
